Early life

Amrita is the daughter of Rukhsana Sultana. Mohinder Kaur (mother-in-law of Rukhsana Sultana) was the daughter of Sir Sobha Singh, who was a noted civil contractor, and made a substantial fortune during the building of New Delhi in the early decades of the 20th century. She is also a relative of notable Indian novelist Khushwant Singh
