History

The railway to Altona was opened in 1888, but to a station to the east named Altona Beach. The line was privately owned, with the Victorian Railways

 taking operations in 1917 and opening the present station on 1 December 1917 as Altona Beach. For a period of time demotored McKeen railmotor

The VR took control of the line and station on 1 October 1924, and the station was later renamed to Altona in 1938. A loop siding existed beside the platform for a number of years, and a siding once extended west towards the site of Westona station
