from 1818 to 1820, before settling in Wheeling, Virginia
(now West Virginia) in 1820.

to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia
vacated by the resignation of Philip C. Pendleton
. Formally was nominated on December 13, 1825, Caldwell was confirmed by the United States Senate
on January 3, 1826. He served as judge until his death, in Wheeling, in 1839 at age 67. He was succeeded by Isaac S. Pennybacker
