. From the history, its name came from Alcoi which is a city of Spain. When Spaniards came to the place during the Spanish era, some of them said that the place remind them of Alcoi, Spain, having a green and lushes environment and the simplicity of the place and the inhabitants. From then on, the place was called Alcoy (native slang of Alcoi). According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 14,571 people. It is approximately 93 kilometres (58 mi) from the provincial capital Cebu City

, more than half of commercial crops. The rest of the communities rely on subsistence fishing and backyard farming. The country's largest dolomite quarry is mined in Barangay Pugalo. Beaches are located in Guiwang and Daanlungsod.

Daan-Lungsod and Guiwang

Daan-Lungsod is the southern-most barangay. Tingko Beach is located in this small barangay. Part of the beach is located in Guiwang. The elementary school is located in Guiwang. A fiesta is held in Daan-Lungsod every May 3 in honor of Santa Cruz. Mambahi is the old name of Daan-Lungsod. There is a reef called Mabad-on which appears during low tide, and is completely submerged during high tide. Mabad-on is listed as Mambahi Reef in the Philippine maritime and navigation map. Guiwang celebrates the June 13 feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua.

Poblacion

Poblacion is the principal barangay of Alcoy. It is where the main facilities of the town located which includes the municipal hall, police station, and main health center.
