MEDIU was named after Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah
, the sacred city where Prophet Muhammad established the capital of the first Islamic state.
MEDIU obtained approval as a university from the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (Malaysia)
(MOHE) on December 26, 2006 and subsequently being registered on June 20, 2007.
MEDIU operates under Malaysia's Private Higher Education Act of 1996 (Act 555) which governs its establishment and the administration in order to prepare and provide a conducive learning environment for students of higher learning.
Facts & Figures
•The first stages of establishing the university started in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah 2004.
•The university accepted the invitation from the Malaysian ministry of higher education to open a centre in Malaysia on 19 June 2006.
•The university opened the first office in Malaysia in 2006 at section 18, Shah Alam.
•Then, the university moved to the current office in Plaza Masalam, section 9, Shah Alam in July 2007.
•The university got the final approval from the Malaysian ministry of higher education in 20 June 2007.
•The university received the first batch of students in Feb. 2008 with number of students reached to 250 from Indonesia.
•Then, the university received 220 students in July 2008 from the countries of time lines 7, 8, and 9 which include Singapore, Thai, Malaysia, and Japan.
•The wider spread started in Nov. 2008.
•Within less than one year, the university received 1208 students for all academic disciplines.
•The university is witnessing great demand from those who are willing to study the available disciplines, as the number of applications reached 2894 until Sep. 2008.
•The university started to receive application form the Middle East in Sep. 2008. The university accepted 342 students from Saudi Arabia, 175 from Kuwait, and one student from Bahrain. 10 lectures and more than 30 tutors were assigned to manage the educational process for those students.
•The number of applicants is expected to be double of the current number after the announcement of new disciplines in bachelor degree and postgraduate studies which offered for registration since Nov. 2008 and Feb. 2009. In addition to the university plan to open new learning and service centres in different parts of the world.
