The airport is named after the late Akanu Ibiam (1906-1995), a Medical Doctor and Statesman who hails from Afikpo in Ebonyi State.The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu serves well over 600,000 passengers currently every year but this number is expected to change when the airport commences services for international passengers.
On February 10, 2010, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria
(FAAN) temporarily closed the airport in order to expand the runway. During the reconstruction process(phase one), passengers were served by the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport

in Calabar
and Port Harcourt International Airport
in Port Harcourt, located south of the Enugu airport(Owerri and Port harcourt airports), East of the Enugu airport(Calabar airport) respectively. The airport was re-opened on December 16th, 2010, however, as airport lighting has not been installed, it is open for "day-light" hours operations, till the completion of the second phase(Airport Lighting) of the reconstruction process of the airport is completed early in the year 2011 and ready for some international flights / activities. Furthermore, the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu will be fully ready for all air-networks of international flights / activities once the third and final phase(New Terminal, Control Tower,local and international terminals/gates, parking lots etc) of the airport reconstruction is ready later in the year 2011 / Early 2012.
