The area was agricultural and rural, with forests dominating its north, until the 1920s. In the '20s and '30s, urban development in the north and east (part of the Athens Industrial Area) replaced much of the farmlands. Today, much of the municipality is industrialized, with urban residences in the west and an industrial area to the north and east, away from the Cephissus
