Adelphi School

The Adelphi School is a historic building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
. It was built 1831-34 by an association of Quakers, the Philadelphia Association of Friends for the Instruction of Poor Children, who focused on the education of the city's "colored population." After the group spent $2,520, the school was ready for classes on February 21, 1832.
The original association owned the building until 1906. In 1908 a similar association, the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, for the Relief of Free Negros unlawfully Held in Bondage and for the Improvement of the Condition of the African Race, gained title. They used the building as a settlement house, conducting activities such as the Boy Scouts
and sewing clubs, as well as more formal educational programs. They retained ownership of the building until 1945.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
in 1978.
