The "lore" of Abbott's Frozen Custard dates to 1902 when a young Arthur Abbott traveled with small carnivals along the eastern seaboard. He peddled his dessert for the most part to support his love of the horse races.

In 1926, he settled in Rochester, New York. He opened up shop at the corner of Lake and Beach Avenues, across the street from Ontario Beach Park, which at the time was a bustling amusement park that drew crowds of people from all over the state.

Arthur next opened up several successful shops in the Playland at Rye Beach. He never lost his love of horses, and in 1952 his horse Blue Man won the Preakness Stakes, earning Arthur an astonishing $86,135.

In 1957, Mr. & Mrs. Schreiber became the owners of Abbott's Frozen Custard and started franchising Abbott's locations. The first franchise was at 630 W. Ridge Rd in Rochester and still operates today. Other franchises would follow, along with other additions that contributed to the business. In 1981, Mrs. Schreiber unveiled the dessert the Turtle. This item heads a line of frozen novelties in production today.
