 company. A week later, however, their stock has tanked, and they decide to reinvest what they have left on stock in what 'average' consumers are buying. While observing consumers' buying patterns in a local supermarket, the three run into Bill

, and, realizing just how average Bill is, they decide to carefully follow his consumption patterns. However, Dale cautions them not to let Bill know that they are tracking his buying habits, citing the 'observer effect' and saying that people act most naturally when they are unaware that others are watching them. Meanwhile, Bill, having recently felt ignored by his friends, simply takes joy in how much Peggy, Dale, and Minh suddenly seem to want to be with him on his outings.

Their observations and investments pay off, and soon Peggy has her new flat screen (although the excessive special features prove a bit cumbersome to the family). However, when Hank asks after how she was able to afford it and finds out about how she, Dale, and Minh had been using Bill, he angrily insists that they let Bill in on what they've been doing. To their relief, Bill is honored rather than upset to hear their confession, proud that his thoughts finally matter to his friends. Soon, Minh suggests to Peggy and Dale that they diversify their stock portfolios, and they drag Bill to a technology trade show in Austin

. Once there, however, Bill finds himself in over his head when it becomes apparent that he has no on-command instinct for consumer electronics, and Peggy and the others abandon him, calling him 'broken'.

In a desperate bid to prove himself to his friends, Bill jumps into the investing game himself, even mortgaging

 his house, only to lose everything. Hank confronts Peggy and the others about what Bill has done, and they agree to sell their own holdings to help Bill pay off his investment debts, and Hank sells the 'ill-gotten' flat-screen to Buck to boost their funds. The money they raise, however, is nowhere near enough, though they go ahead and offer it to Bill anyway; Bill tells them, as Buck and a hired mover help pack up the flat-screen, that he has simply filed for bankruptcy

. Buck and his mover take notice, and eagerly ask how the filing process works; Bill, happy to have people listening to him once again, gladly fills them in.

This episode received 7.04 million viewers, the third-highest rated program on Fox that evening.
