The ALP-45DP is a dual-mode locomotive
currently being built by Bombardier Transportation
. It was unveiled to the public on September 21, 2010 at Innotrans 2010.
has ordered 26 of these locomotives to bridge gaps between non-electrified lines (the Raritan Valley Line
and the southern section of the North Jersey Coast Line
) and electrified
sections of track into New York Penn Station
, which has an ordinance prohibiting locomotives from emitting diesel smoke within its tunnels.
They are to be numbered 4500-4525 with possible options numbered 4526-4588.
The purchase of an option for ten additional locomotives was approved on July 14, 2010, as part of NJ Transit's 2011 capital budget.
Unit 4501 arrived in the United States on March 13, 2011 at Port Newark, N.J., from where it was sent to the Transportation Technology Center
in Pueblo, Colorado (over CSX by way of Selkirk Yard
) for testing. 4500 arrived in late April 2011, and was officially unveiled on May 11, 2011 at Newark Penn Station. This unit will test on NJT property pending FRA approval, prior to an anticipated start of commercial usage in late 2011.
As of November 7th, 2011, locomotives 4500-4503 have arrived on property.

(AMT) has also ordered a batch of 20 locomotives (with an option for 10 more) for the Repentigny-Mascouche Line (AMT)
.. This new line is mostly un-electrified, but joins the existing electrified Deux-Montagnes Line to access the Central Station through the poorly ventilated, electric only Mount Royal Tunnel
. They are to be numbered 1350-1369.
AMT 1350 arrived in Montreal on June 9, 2011, after being shipped to Newark and then moving north to its new home. It is scheduled to enter operational service in 2012.
As of November 2011, locomotives 1350-1354 have arrived on property.

electric locomotive
that has been used by New Jersey Transit since 2002, although it started production after the uprated ALP-46A.
Its two Caterpillar 3512C-HD engines are arranged symmetrically around the transformer and traction converters to keep the weight balanced.
As a result of the additional engine-generator
s, the ALP-45DP is approximately 2 metre longer and 40 t (88,184.9 lb) heavier than the ALP-46 and ALP-46A.
Under the wires, the ALP-45DP has approximately 70% of the power of the ALP-46A (75% of the power of the ALP-46), although both its tractive effort and dynamic braking effort are similar. Away from the wires, it has much less power than in electric mode (55% to 72.5%), but has similar power and tractive effort characteristics to NJT's existing PL42AC
