group. Its members are "Horikawa Hiroyuki", "Kawaguchi Kentaro", "Sato Shingo", and "Takada Noriaki". In 1995, Kawaguchi and Sato started their musical activities together and by 1997, the current four members were performing together. 54-71 is known for the originality of their style as well as their intense live performances. Genre-defying and minimalistic, the music of 54-71 is identified by driving basslines, surgically precise drum parts, and poignantly restrained guitaring. Lyrically, 54-71 appears to draw great inspiration from American hip-hop artists; indeed, the band's only 2009 release, "IDEA OF A MASTER PIECE", was a collaboration with Kool Keith. Sato is strikingly versatile as a front man and has incorporated many different vocal approaches throughout the band's career.

  • "54-71" (4/20/2000)

The groups first release, 54-71's self-titled debut saw the band at their most stripped-down. The songs are simple, yet offer subtle complexities. Sato, while contributing substantial examples of his signature poetry, keeps a relatively low profile throughout, leaving plenty of space for the band's rhythms to solidify and collect weight through patient repetition.
  • "untitled" (7/24/2002)

54-71's sophomore release illustrated a new level of pop artistry achieved by the band. The songs feature more sophisticated arrangements, longer melodic threads, and a deeper ownership on the part of Sato of his role as frontman. Here Sato has integrated his rap influences more deeply, with more rhymes, longer phrases, and more assertion on the microphone. Musically, the bass, drums, and guitar continue to flesh out ideas first established on the first album, this time with further exploration of unusual rhythms and stacatto accenting.
