Format

As in past competitions, the four teams from each league were divided into two groups of four, with two teams from each league in each group. The top two finishers in each group advanced to the knockout stage.

Group stage

The competition consisted of an initial group stage with the top two teams from each groups advancing to the semifinals.

Tie-breaking criteria

If two teams were equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
  1. Goal differential
  2. Goals scored
  3. Head-to-head results (points only)
  4. Coin toss

In the past, SuperLiga had used head-to-head results as the first tiebreaker, but the rules were changed to bring this year's competition inline with international tie-breaking standards. In the event that three or more teams are equal on points, then the remaining tiebreakers are employed to advance a single team. The tiebreakers are applied again between the teams that failed to advance if it is necessary to determine a second-place team.

If the tiebreakers fail to advance a single team, the tiebreakers are then used to eliminate one of the three teams.
