. The Vandals won six of their first seven games in 2009, but lost four of five WAC games to finish 7–5 in the regular season and placed fourth (4–4) in the nine-team WAC.
They were invited to the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise
, in which they defeated the Bowling Green Falcons
(7–5) of the MAC
on December 30, with a score of 43–42. This was the Vandals' second bowl invitation since returning to Division I-A (FBS) in 1996
