Olazábal, who was playing ahead of Woosnam and Watson, made his first bogey of the day on 18 after going from fairway bunker to greenside bunker and failing to hole a 45-foot par putt. Watson, who had eagled both 13 and 15, missed the fairway right with his tee shot on the 18th hole and then hit his second shot into a green side bunker. He chipped out and three putted for a double bogey 6. Woosnam then holed a five foot putt for par to win his first major championship by one stroke over Olazábal.
