This was the first year the 8 qualifying teams were split into two double elimination brackets of 4 teams each (the 1,8,4, and 5 seeds in one bracket, with the 2,3,6, and 7 seeds in the other), with the winners of each bracket meeting in a 1 game championship. The NCAA, in an agreement with CBS, switched to this format so there would be one, made for TV, winner take all championship game. Previously, all 8 teams were in one double elimination bracket. In 2003, the dual bracket format was kept in place, but the final series between the two bracket winners was made a best 2 out of 3 series.
