in 1978, the unit became a composite group operating both F-102s and C-130s. Upgraded to F-4 Phantom IIs in 1978, then to F-15A in 1987, later added F-15C Eagles in the 1990s. Added KC-135 Air Refueling Component in 1998.
In 1989 with inactivation of the PACAF 326th Air Division
, the 154th Composite Group took over the air defense Radar mission in Hawaii. The 169th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron began operating a JSS radar site at Mount Kaala, Oahu along with the FAA, and the 150th Aircraft Control and Warning Flight operates a joint-use JSS radar site at Kokee Air Force Station, Kauai. These radar sites are linked to the NORAD Hawaii Region Air Operations Center (HIRAOC) at Wheeler Army Airfield
, Oahu, 21°28′57"N 158°02′45"W. With these two sites, 24/7 air surveillance of the Hawaiian island chain is provided. The 154th Aircraft Control Squadron on Kauai also provides a mobile, self-sustainable, combat ready, forward extension and control element equipped to meet the Air Force's ground theater air control systems.
Airlift component upgraded to C-17 Globemaster III, 2006. In late 2010 due to BRAC 2005 realignment of 319th ARW at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, received KC-135R in December. Upgrading fighter component to F-22 Raptor, 2010,

Overview
The 154 WG is probably the most unique composite wing in the USAF, consisting of fighter, air refueling, airlift and Air Defense Radar units. Due to its diverse organization, it has multiple missions:- Fighter: To provide fighter coverage for the Hawaiian Islands and surrounding areas.
- Air Refueling: To provide aircraft which can refuel planes en route to various locations around the Pacific Ocean.
- Airlift: To provide support and planes which will help transfer cargo during peacetime, wartime, and times of emergency.
- Radar: Provide information to the Hawaii Region Air Operations Center at Wheeler Army Airfield. The radar information is used for both military and civilian air traffic management.

History
Organized initially with P-47N Thunderbolts in 1946 at Bellows Field. Moved to Hickam in 1948 with inactivation of Bellows, has maintained operations at Hickam ever since.
