The team was created in 1996 by five separate basketball clubs in Stockholm (Alvik BK (established 1956), KFUM Blackeberg, KFUM Central, KFUM South (established 1949) and KFUM Järfälla which today no longer participate in it), to create a strong club with equal conditions for all.

The name for 08 Stockholm was chosen as Human Rights as a result of the club's commitment to using basketball as a tool to combat racism.

Since the team bagan, it has had a team represented in the top two leagues in Sweden; Basketligan (men) and Damligan (ladies). In 2001, the team were SM-gold for both leagues. As of 2004, the club had (including its parent clubs) won 38 senior SM-gold awards.

As of 2004, it is Sweden's largest single sports organization.

The team's general manager is Kevin Ryan.
