Mars water found while Mars water is impossible?

I have read this article on multiple new streams discovered:

Headline:Strongest evidence yet for water on Mars
Thursday 4 August 2011.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2011/aug/04/strongest-evidence-yet-water-mars

phenix also tasted water on: August 1, 2008

So, phenix had a snowball and never let it thaw? This would have proven if the water state on mars was possible. Although the article stated further research was to be done, it seemed the snowball melting experiment was forgotten about. So my question is why didn't they melt the ice and see if water is possible on mars? Or why don’t they just take some water and do an experiment to see if it evaporates? Its easier than hypothesising for a century.
