Actually he was rather less than great. Most of his battles were generaled by his nobles and he establish no system by which his empire would survive his death. So the moment he died the generals and nobles divided it all up and that was that.

Alexander was a barbarian from Macedonia. To call him great is like calling Stalin or Saddam Great. All he accomplished in his life was murder and destruction. Far from the intellectuals in Greece, he was a mere swordsman.
