Scientist first glimpsed the asteroid belt in 1766. For many decades they thought the large asteroid they were seeing was a planet. They called it Ceres.

In 1807 other asteroids were discovered near Ceres, but the Napoleonic wars stopped the investigation. It resumed in 1845.
