He is probably one of the best artist whose works remain alive. Despite the severity of his life and illness, he painted and in his paintings you can see the pain he himself suffered as well as his strong sense of empathy for others. He painted at great cost to himself physically and emotionally, yet he persevered. His sketches of the common people reflect his deep understanding of the pain of their daily lives. He is unique in his ability to use broad strokes to give an overall impression of the subject he paints. Of course, he developed his style during the impressionist era, but in my opinion is the strongest of all the impressionist. When you look intently at most of his paintings, you may be able to get a feel of his emotional state as well as the subject he portrays. He is truly very expressive and that is what art is supposed to represent.
