• This word is sometimes pronounced like sub- + mariner; however, since the prefix sub- can imply inferiority (as in subpar or subhuman), this pronunciation can be considered offensive by some, especially in the US. The pronunciation submarine + -er, but with stress on third syllable, is therefore preferred by many or most submarine crew members today.
