From Germanic *setla-, representing Indo-European *sed-lo-, from *sed- ‘sit’. Cognate with Old High German sezzal (German Sessel), Middle Dutch sētel (Dutch zetel), Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐍄𐌻𐍃. The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek , Latin sella, Russian седло.
