Hindustani मसाला / (masālā) "spice(s)", from Persian (maṣālih) "affairs, materials, spices", plural of (maṣlahat) "affair, policy, best thing to do", both from Arabic, derived from (ṣálaḥa) "be fit, competent, usable".
