Shortening of jean fustian, itself from jean (from Gene 'Genoa [city state]', the -s was added influenced by the cognate Old French Jannes, (modern=) Gênes) + fustian 'strong cotton fabric' (from , from fustaine, from medieval fustaneum, probably from Latin fustis 'club; (medieval sense) tree trunk').
