Etymology


Uncertain; any of the following are possible ways in which enlighten was formed:
  • light + en- -en, intensifying verbal circumfix;
  • originally a by-form of inlighten, itself derived from the obsolete inlight + -en; or,
  • in- or en- + lighten.
