It was founded in 1868 as a railway station on the Oryol
–Riga
railroad, better known as Riga — Oryol Railway. In following years the settlement grew around the Zhukovka station. The 43-km branch line leads to Kletnya.
Town status was granted to it in 1962. In 1914, there were fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. It was captured by the Germans on August 24, 1941.
