Club career

Zhang Lu started his professional football career with Liaoning FC in 2005 after graduating from their youth team. Despite his age he had quickly established himself within the Liaoning squad in his debut season. However while he had firmly established himself as the first choice goalkeeper by the 2008 league season he unfortunately saw them relegated to the second tier of the Chinese league system. Despite this setback he remained with Liaoning and helped the team win the division title as well as promotion back to the top tier after only one season.

International career

He was included in the squad that took part in the Football at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Men's tournament, however he was the third choice keeper and did not play in any of the games. While he had limited time with the youth team he would still go on to make his senior debut in a friendly against Portugal
