Yiannos Papantoniou (born 27 July 1949) is a Greek
politician, member of the Greek Parliament and former minister of Defence, National Economy and Finance. In the past he has been linked with the pro-European wing of PASOK
. He is the main architect behind Greece's economic reforms in the late 90s that led to the implementation of the euro
. His relationship with party chairman Giorgos Papandreou
has suffered due to a public disagreement over matters of economic policy. In 2011, after prosecution's action, a Greek parliamentary committee is investigating Papantoniou's criminal liabilities (bribery) as former defence minister over the purchase of four faulty submarines which the Greek navy received via direct commission to a German manufacturer (German HDV and Skaramagkas Shipyards) in a deal worth $1.8 billion.
