History

The Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal (WCAT), the predecessor of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) was established October 1, 1985 by the Ontario government’s Workers’ Compensation Amendment Act, 1984 (no.2). The Tribunal is the final level of appeal to which workers and employers may bring disputes concerning matters relating to workplace safety and insurance. The Tribunal is separate from and independent of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

In 1998 the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act S.O. 1997 , c.16 came into force and changed the name of the Tribunal to Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT).
