The popularity of women’s fashion gloves waned in the 1970s, and Wittenstein sought to increase its market. It began creating steel nail guns, machines for dosing and capping, and other mechanical devices.
Walter Wittenstein gradually withdrew from the enterprise with his son Manfred Wittenstein entering the company. After his entry in 1979 Manfred Wittenstein changed the manufacturing ideology and product selection. In the search for market opportunities and manufacturing efficiencies, Manfred Wittenstein quickly realized the anticipated market demand for servo motors. His solution to be involved in that industry was to apply the company's mechanical knowledge in the production of planetary speed reducers for the servo motors.
The world’s first planetary gearbox (the alpha SP) was introduced at the Hanover fair in 1983. This product caused the founding of a company independent from Dewitta which Mr Wittenstein named alpha getriebebau. Alpha getriebebau GmbH was founded by taking a company who made gears (Bastian) and collaborating to form a corporation which made mechanical gear reducers. Manfred Bastian and Manfred Wittenstein were acting partners for the company and their headquarters became the warehouse in Igersheim

For the first decade, alpha annually recorded double-digit growth. The Dewitta company was sold in 1996.
As well as subsidiaries, the company began branching into new markets such Control Loading System
technology, electronics and software. Business units such as Wittenstein Aerospace & Simulation were formed to better support the markets in which their products were being supplied. The company has also seen success in supporting FreeRTOS
and spawning spin-off projects called SafeRTOS and OpenRTOS.
In 2008, Mr. Wittenstein was named the president of the VDMA.

Wittenstein was founded in 1949 by Walter Wittenstein and Bruno Dähn. The company was originally called DEWITTA, and primarily produced sewing equipment for the production of women’s gloves. The company moved to Bad MergentheimBad Mergentheim

International expansion
