Winifred Shotter was born in London, England, the daughter of Frederick Ernest and Harriet Payne Shotter. Frederick worked as a tie cutter and had married Harriet on the 21st of June, 1903 at the Parish Church St. Mary Haggerston in Middlesex County.

Winifred Shotter got her big break in the early 1920s when she was pulled from a chorus line to play Rhoda Marley in the farce comedy Rookery Nook by Ben Travers. She would go on to appear in a number of what became known as the Aldwych farces popular at London’s Aldwych Theatre

 throughout the remainder of the 1920s and into the 1930s. These plays, written by Travers, usually revolved around a misunderstanding, borrowed clothes, dropped trousers and a surprised Winifred running across the stage dressed in a pink crêpe de Chine teddy.

Over the remainder of her career Winifred Shotter would continue to perform on stage and in film. In 1931 she married Michael Green, a union that did not last. After her marriage to Hollywood actor Gilbert Davis in 1951 she retired from the stage and moved to Switzerland. After his death she returned to England where she would pass away on April 4, 1996 at Redhill in Surry.
