William Walsh (academic)

William Walsh was a professor of Education at the University of Leeds
and its acting Vice-Chancellor from 1981 to 1983.
Walsh graduated in English from Downing College, Cambridge
in 1943 and worked as an English teacher before becoming a lecturer in Education at the University College of North Staffordshire
. After a similar post at Edinburgh University, he became Professor and Head of the Department of Education at the University of Leeds in 1957. From 1972 he was Professor of Commonwealth Literature (Emeritus) in the School of English.
Following the death in 1981 of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Edward Boyle, he took on the position of acting Vice-Chancellor, until a successor (Edward Parkes
) was appointed in 1983.
In 1983 he gave the John Keats
memorial lecture.
He married May Watson in 1945 and they had a son and daughter. He died in 1996 in Leeds.
