. He was appointed Archdeacon of Norwich in 1328. For several years he was at the Papal Court at Avignon
, working as auditod of the palace and employed by the Pope to mediate between the English and French kings. Nominated Bishop of Norwich on 23 January 1344, he was consecrated on 23 May 1344. He died on 6 January 1355.
Bateman contributed to the establishment of Gonville Hall (later Gonville and Caius College), Cambridge
in 1348, and in the wake of the great plague of 1349 which significantly diminished the population of canonists and other lawyers in the Diocese of Norwich
