Western also offers internships and work study programs for students in the 12th grade. However, students must maintain and A or B in their magnet programs.
Western School of Technology and Environmental Science is ranked among the top high schools in the nation according to Newsweek. Only 6 percent of all the public schools in the U.S. made the list. Western was ranked 1257 out of 1623 schools in 2010.

This school is also currently one of the few, possibly the only school in the Baltimore County School System that does not have a field of its own, and so many sports activities must be played at nearby Community College of Baltimore County
