The Western Australian Youth Parliament is a program coordinated by the YMCA of Perth

, and acts as the most senior youth advisory body to the Western Australian government. Participants spend time in committees developing bills, and then attend a week-long camp during which the legislation and other motions are debated in the Western Australian Parliament. Successfully passed bills are handed to the state government for consideration. In 2004 the first regional Youth Parliament sitting occurred in Albany, Western Australia

Youth MPs

Youth MPs undergo a rigorous selection process, administered in joint partnership between the YMCA and State Government. Participants generally represent their local member of parliament, spending three days in the Legislative Assembly

 debating, amending and voting on bills and general motions.

Youth Governor

The position of Youth Governor, appointed by the program's taskforce, is charged with overseeing the parliamentary selection process and appointing the Youth Government. It also ensures that the composition of the chambers properly corresponds to the makeup of the Western Australian Parliament. The current Youth Governor is Daniel Earl .

2009 program

The 2009 Western Australian Youth Parliament was the first year that both the Legislative Assembly

 and the Legislative Council

 were concurrently occupied. It was also the first year that the Youth Governor was provided with a ceremonial guard consisting of members from the youth cadre of the Australian Defence Service.

Supported by the City of Perth and SkyWest, the program consisted of approximately 90 Youth MPs. The Youth Government was led by The Honourable Youth Premier Zach Cole, and the Youth Opposition by The Honourable Chad Satterlee.

The nine committees investigated and sponsored legislation in six areas:
  • Environment
  • Regional Development
  • Education
  • Police, Justice and Corrective Services
  • Health
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Energy
  • Indigenous Affairs
  • Youth Affairs

2011 program

The Youth Government was this year presided over by The Honourable Youth Premier Ashlee Kovalevs and the Youth Opposition presided over by The Honourable John Pawley, with the Honourable Youth Governor Daniel Earl.

A total of four government committees investigated four areas:
  • State and Regional Development
  • Citizenship, Indigenous & Multicultural Affairs
  • Environment
  • Education


Additionally a total of four opposition committees investigated four areas:
  • Health
  • Youth
  • Police & Justice
  • Child Protection


On top of two Matters of Public Interest, relating to the curbing of drink driving and banning of alcohol advertising

and sponsorship at sporting events, as well as motion to end offshore processing.
