West Branch-Salem Rivalry

Salem High School
Salem High School (Ohio)
Salem High School is a public high school in Salem, Ohio, USA. It is the only high school in the Salem City School district. Since 2006 the building has also housed Salem Junior High School, for grades 7 and 8, though it is administered separately from the high school. As of the 2009–2010...

is located about 9 miles away from West Branch High School, is considered to be the greatest rivalry West Branch has. The reason can be traced back to before 1971, when West Branch, without a field at the school, was forced to use Salem's field a home field. Due to this, the games played there were usually intense, and very emotional for the players involved.

In 1971, Clinton Heacock Stadium was built, allowing West Branch to play at the school. However, the rivalry continued to be fierce, with occasional fan fights breaking out.

In 1994, perhaps the best game of the rivalry was played at West Branch. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 21-21. However, West Branch managed to pull off a stunning 28-21 victory in overtime. This win, coupled with a perfect regular season, was most likely the biggest motivation in the State Championship that was won that year.

In 1996, the fighting after the game caused by fans was so intense that the rivalry was called off for several years. However, in 1998, the rivalry fired back up, with Salem pulling a stunning victory over the Warriors. This win was the last for them until 2005..

The most recent game ended in a 28-26 loss to the Quakers. Salem jumped out to a 21-6 lead and held off a West Branch 4th quarter rally to win the 2009 installment.

Salem will join West Branch in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference beginning with the 2011-12 school year, which will further the rivalry as the Quakers and Warriors will be guaranteed to meet yearly in all sports at all grade levels.

Web Site and Web Design Classes

The goal of the West Branch High School web site is to provide vital school information and updates to the students and community members of West Branch High School.

The Web Design Classes at West Branch are responsible for the maintenance of the entire WBHS web site (www.wbhs.k12.oh.us). In 2008, the home page and basic structure was re-designed by student Eric Waggoner, who also redesigned many other pages. Led by Instructors Christy Biery and Glenda Sharp, dozens of other students work every day to maintain the hundreds of pages in the WBHS site.

Starting in 2008, web design student Victor Trimmer took on the task of maintaining and renovating the West Branch Local School District Web Site (www.westbranch.k12.oh.us), led by District staff member Cheryl Wuthrick. It has undergone minor changes since, and continues to be maintained by Trimmer and Wuthrick.
