. The population was 3,939 at the 2000 census.
The city is located at the northwest corner of Wayland Township
, but is politically independent. The city has also incorporated a portion of land in the south of adjacent Leighton Township

forms the western boundary of the city. A portion of Gun Lake also resides in Wayland Township, which is a popular summer time area because of the so called "Party Island" that resides in the very large lake. Al Capone

In the city the population was spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 14.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
