. It was named after the nineteenth-century British phytogeographer Hewett Watson
. The journal was published by the Botanical Society of the British Isles
. It was first published in 1949 with the subtitle "journal & proceedings of the Botanical Society of the British Isles". Watsonia is being progressively digitized by the BSBI and made available online with unrestricted access.
In 2010 Watsonia ceased publication and in 2011 it will be replaced by the New Journal of Botany (print: , online: ), a peer-reviewed
