). The main person behind the founding of the Washington Medical College was Horatio Gates Jameson.

Jameson had an ongoing feud with members of the University of Maryland, Baltimore

's medical faculty. This had caused him to want to form a new medical school in Baltimore. He eventually convinced Washington College of Pennsylvania to support his scheme. Jameson was a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore

's School of Medicine and remained at Washington Medical College until 1835 when he took a position on the faculty of the Cincinnati Medical School (since merged into the University of Cincinnati

In 1832 Washington Medical College was granted its own charter by the state of Maryland, thus separating from Washington College of Pennsylvania. In 1835 John C. S. Monkur, another medical graduate of the University of Maryland, joined the faculty and became the main figure on it. In 1839 the institution was reconstituted as Washington University of Baltimore with plans to also have a college of arts and sciences and a college of divinity as well as preparatory schools. However the college never actually consisted of any institution besides the medical school. The college closed in 1851 and sold off its buildings to liquidate its debts.
