E-Book Pioneer

Mr. Adler is a pioneer in electronic publishing. Ten years ago he envisioned that digital publishing would soon be the norm, and the publishing business would morph to digitization. He acquired his complete backlist and converted this entire library to digital publishing formats. He based this action on the fact that now his books would never go out of print, they would last beyond his lifetime and be a legacy for the perpetuation of his life’s work.

Mr. Adler wrote a piece for the Author’s Guild advocating that authors had better get ready for a seismic change in the way the traditional publishing business operates. He cited the fact that traditional publishers no longer have a monopoly on marketing, distribution, publicity, and content. He pointed out that prolific authors like himself had better take charge of their own destiny since the traditional publishers will slowly fade as the principle conduit for authors to get read.

Now, Mr. Adler’s predictions are coming true. In a few years, the big-box bookstore, the major outlet for the printed book, will be finished. Without this distribution arm, bookselling will become a digital item available on the Internet. Authors will no longer get big advances. Anyone who writes a book of whatever quality will be able to publish it on the Internet. Books will never go out of print. In a few years, there will be literally millions upon millions of books available on the Net.

Therein lies the challenge for the author. How does he get read? Mr. Adler has been experimenting with this idea for years. He recently made an exclusive six-book deal with Amazon, all material in his inventory that was introduced to the public for the first time.
