Though highly acclaimed by critics, regular user reviews criticized the game for its excluding of powers present in previous Wario Land titles, including the ground pound and the ability to pick up enemies. Users praised the game's graphics, however, saying they were "way ahead of their time." The game's playability was also criticized. The game was ridiculed for the absence of "responsive" controls, as well as Wario's sloppy movement.

The game's difficulty was called by some "out of the comfort zone for a platforming game."
