Traffic block is very acute during Sabarimalai pilgrimage season. Walayar is surrounded by some picturesque spots notable for photography. Walayar is a place where you can refresh yourself when you are on the way to Kerala. It has few good roadside hotels and lodging facilities.

Walayar has a railway station which is about 100 meters away from NH 47. All the passengers trains have a stop here. Walayar is good place to take a small break. Walayar came to limelight of late due to the presence of the Sales Tax Check post (supposed to be the most corrupted before and one of the 10 biggest check posts in India) and Malabar Cements. There is also a Deer Park located beside the NH 47 which presently now in a poor condition due to lack of facilitation. The roads in Walayar are in a bad condition with lots of potholes and frequently closing one lane due to the lining up of the trucks.

The RTO Check post located in Walayar is the biggest one in TamilNadu, In terms of revenue to the state, also it stands in the first position. Walayar is also famous for lottery shops which are located in abundance here. Exporting timber also is a major occupation here.

Bus service to Walayar is very frequent from both Palghat and Coimbatore. Both KSRTC and TNSTC operates buses via walayar. All the buses from Palghat to Coimbatore have a stop at walayar.
