WWHN began its broadcasting activities on September 14, 1987 as a community radio

 station serving just the southwestern Chicago suburbs. On November 30, 1989, Raymond and Tornelia Hawkins acquired ownership of WWHN and a year later has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission

 to increase wattage to 1,000 in order to compete in a large market. Since 1990, it has maintained its current gospel format. The Hawkins' petitioned again with the FCC to increase its wattage to 1,500; giving WWHN a denser signal in the area, however according to the FCC database, the application did not go through. WWHN proclaims that their signal coverage is the best of any urban station in the Chicago market.
