WHJX during the late 1980s to the mid 1990s, when it was known as "Hot 101.5." When that came under common owership with WJBT, 101.5 tilted the format from rhythmic (urban crossover) to the current one and changed its name, calls and branding to counter compete.

Before 1989 and a facility and power upgrade, the station operated as a lower-powered station serving Brunswick, Georgia called WPIQ.
