WKYU has not always had the distinction of being the sole non-KET PBS affiliate in Kentucky, however. From the 1968 inception of KET until the 1989 debut of WKYU, Louisville
's WKPC, licensed to the city's government, was the state's only public television station outside the state network. WKPC and WKYU shared the distinction until KET acquired WKPC in 1998.
