The station launched on February 13, 1984 with the callsign WANV-FM. It was changed to WVAO on February 21, 1994.
On February 23, 1996, WVAO changed its callsign to WCYK-FM and adopted its current Country
format, branded as "Country 99.7".
On July 10, 2007, it was reported that Kalil and Company Inc announced that it brokered a deal for Clear Channel to sell its entire Charlottesville cluster to George Reed's Sistema 102 LLC for $7.75 Million. Sistema 102 LLC changed its name to Monticello Media less than two months later on September 1, and two months later on November 3, WCYK-FM changed the branding to "Your Country 99.7" and used the slogan "Charlottesville's Country Station". On the morning of September 16, 2010, the station changed its branding to "HitKicker 99.7" and changed its website accordingly.
