WBJZ replaced 102.3 WISS-FM, for a short time after sign on WBJZ simulcasted former sister station's WISS/1100am's format.

When Steve Peterson ran the station it featured a locally automated Blues, Jazz, Standards, Swing, Classical format. Tami Rens and Steve Peterson shared voicing the station.

Prior to becoming Smooth Jazz, WBJZ-FM ran a country format known as "B-104.7", this was short lived, as it replaced a Smooth Jazz format that previously aired on the station.
