Vörösmarty tér or Vörösmarty square is a small but popular square in the Budapest city centre
at the northern end of Váci utca
.
At the centre of the square facing west is a large statue
of poet Mihály Vörösmarty
, on the pedestal of which people tend to congregate. Behind the monument is a small fenced park and a fountain flanked by stone lions.
At the north end of the square is the famous Café Gerbeaud
and stairs to the southern terminus
of the Budapest Metro
's venerable yellow line (M1).
The square is ringed by expensive cafés and restaurants catering mostly to tourists. Other tenants include offices for Ibusz and Aeroflot
as well as the British Embassy.
The square was formally known as Gizella tér.
